Your recreational vehicle is your means of going on short and long trips with friends and family, which means it’s equipped with all the conveniences you need to be comfortable while you travel. However, RVs are somewhat compact in many instances, and cooking hot meals in a small kitchen can seem quite daunting, especially to those new to RVing. There are some things you can do, though, that will make cooking food in your RV much less stressful.

1. Prepare Batch Meals

If you have the space and time to do so, you can cook larger amounts of food at one time and put away the leftovers to use in future meals. Grill extra cuts of meat when you’re making burgers so that you can use cooked chicken or fish in a salad. Cook bigger pots of soup or chili to reheat later. Steam extra vegetables or cook more rice or pasta that you can use for another meal.

2. Cook Less

You can also avoid turning on the stove or oven at all by preparing foods that don’t need to be cooked. Breakfast options include cereal, yogurt, and fresh fruit; lunch can be a cold pasta salad with leftover meat or sandwiches; dinner can be a big green salad with more leftover protein.

3. Clean While You Go

Because your RV doesn’t offer you much preparation space, you’ll need to clean up your work space as you go to avoid running out of room and ending up with a big mess. Rinse knives and cutting boards immediately, compost vegetable scraps, wipe down counters, put away ingredients, and set pans aside to soak so that you can make easier work of cooking.

4. Use a Slow Cooker

A slow cooker is a great tool to have in your RV kitchen, because you can prepare lots of different types of hot foods in it with very little effort. Stews, soups, cuts of meat, chilis, casseroles, and even desserts are easily made with a few minutes of prep time. All you have to do then is turn on your slow cooker and go about your day. By evening, a warm dinner will be ready!
