A Guide to RV Travel with Pets

Dec. 13 2023 RV By Pete's RV PA

When you go on a trip with your family, you will want to bring every member along, which might include a furry friend or two! Your pets can bring just as much joy and excitement to an RV trip as friends or family, making them great companions for all your travels. However, it’s important to keep in mind that like the people traveling with you, your pets have needs of their own that must be met. So, before heading out on your next RV adventure consider some of the steps you should take to ensure the comfort and safety of your pet, while on the road.

Here are some helpful tips for traveling with your pets in an RV!

Getting Comfortable

Before you head out on your family vacation or extended road trip, you need to make sure your pet is fully adjusted to traveling in your RV. Try to make your first few adventures with your pet brief, such as going on short weekend trips to a location within a few hours’ drive of your home. This way, your pet can gradually get used to being in the moving RV and you won’t have to worry about them panicking when it’s time for a long journey!

Staying Safe

If you’re towing a travel trailer instead of driving a motorhome, you will want to make sure your pet stays in the front of the vehicle, with the rest of the family. You can’t leave your pet alone in the trailer while you’re driving, so it’s best to keep them in their crate or carrier while the vehicle is in motion. This will prevent them from accidentally escaping and getting caught underfoot, as well as creating a distraction for the driver. Additionally, never leave your pet in your RV for extended periods, without temperature controls on.

Making Stops

Remember to make frequent stops so that your pet can eat, drink, and relieve themselves. It’s important that they have a chance to walk, stretch, and take a moment to relax, with the rest of the family. In addition, try to keep your pet on a leash while you’re outside of the vehicle, to ensure that they don’t run off or scare other animals.
